Four ways you can help a child today

SPEAK ENCOURAGING WORDS

Children thrive in an environment of love, respect, encouragement, and positive discipline. Praise kids for doing something without being told, for good grades or being nice to a sibling. Praise for helping around the house or for doing something right/well. Build them up rather than tearing them down.

WORK TO Prevent child abuse

Every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children. The United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations, losing on average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds.

  • Children's Defense Fund: The Fund provides state fact sheets which contain the following: child abuse statistics, the number of low weight babies, infant mortality rates, child poverty and hunger data.
  • antiviolenceandabuse.orgAnswers some questions about child abuse.
  • ChildHelp-USA: National child abuse statistics

WORK TO PREVENT BULLYING

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
